Willow Weaving Workshop – Creating a Willow Pheasant

Autumn 2016 I held my first workshop with our host Martin Keeley of Rutland Willows.  Martin and his wife Louise run RutlandWillows which was originally founded by Louise’s farther John Shone.  Apart from Willow animals and sculptures they also do Dry Stone Walling and Hedge Laying. Our course was well attended and Martin started off by teaching us about various types of willow and its preparation to be used for weaving. We learnt how to do some basic weaving pattens and techniques and created a small woven miniature panel much like those of the fence panel type, just in miniature.  We then had a go at making a fish on a line.  After our lunch we all got started on creating our pheasants.  There were some inevitable frustrations and giggles while we were trying to do as Martin had shown us.  Deep concentration could be seen on peoples faces as everyone was focussed on the task at hand.  It was deeply absorbing and creative.

At the end of the day we all managed to turn out a pretty respectable looking pheasant that will do our gardens or homes proud!

It was an enjoyable day and one i would hope to repeat next year.  Martin has agreed to repeat this one day course for any of those whom showed interest, but were unable to attend and anyone who would like to have a refresher could adapt the pheasant to another bird such as a duck.  We may then follow on the next day for an advanced class where we will be shown how to create a four legged animal such as a fox.

Sunday 10th July we spent a very enjoyable day with Jean Whitebread from Equine Reconnect.  The class was well attended and the content as an introduction to Craniosacral Therapy was very informative and fun.  There was a good mix of classroom based discussion and interactive demonstrations for participants to feel the amount of pressure needed to feel the craniosacral pulse, cardiac pulse and respiratory pulse. Jean provided each student with a useful manual with some history of Craniosacral therapy and some hand positions for feeling the pulse and for connecting with the horses.

Jean brought along several books to browse at during the breaks and a skull for us to clearly see the sutures and structure of the horses skull.  We then had a variety of horses and ponies to work with including two brought along for the day by one of the students. The new arrivals caused a bit of excitement among my group so there was lots of neighing and raised energy.

First each horse was allowed to stand however they chose to arrange themselves and we assessed their posture and noted any observations.  They were then walked up and down to assess movement and posture.  We then practiced what we had learned in the morning.

After lunch we returned to the barn and were amazed to see that the whole energy had shifted to one of calm, relaxation and peacefulness. Scarlet had even gone to bed and she had originally been the only one to have said “No thanks I’m not sure about that”, so her lady had respected her wishes and chose to work just outside her box with Dotty instead.

We did some further hand positions and learned a few extra little bonus tips from Jean for our tool box to help our horses.  The horses were all showing signs of releasing tension, big yawns, sleepy eyes, licking and chewing etc.  Afterwards we had another look at each horse as a group and compared notes from the morning before and after the sessions.  It was a pleasure to see all horses and ponies had some clear changes.  Some had visible changes in their face alignment like nostrils or eyes being more level, they all seemed to be standing more square with their weight better aligned over their legs, they all looked somehow plumped out, softer, elongated necks and backs and a more of a swing to their walk and more pliable and soft in their musculature.

To conclude Jean explained how students might like to take training further.  The route to qualification in this therapy seems long and very expensive, however the introduction day that Jean offers represents great value for money and certainly gives any horse owner a great tool for helping their horse with a gentle non invasive way to connect with your horse on deep level to promote healing and relaxation.

I was very pleased to make use for the first time one of our barns that is in the process of being renovated to create a dedicated class and meeting room.  Overlooking the orchard and stable block it makes a perfect setting and convenient to interact with the horses.

This has been a popular class and Jean and I hope to host it again either in the Autumn or next Spring for all those that showed interest in attending but missed it this time round.  Do message me or Jean if you would like to add your name to the list and we will look at setting another date.

Due to the windy weather many of the horses were a bit on their toes and anxious.  Hannah showed participants how to get their horses to target a grid of cones or get their focus by following a target or being sent from A to B over poles or other obstacles. Some that had already had some prior clicker training already found it a comfort and safe place to stand on a small mat.

Some worked on things to help shape posture.  Moving shoulders was a common theme to help balance and straighten the horses.  Also to help keep shoulders and ribs away from the handler if the horse was tense and leaning in.  Some good ridden work was also achieved by some.  Help with better transitions and softness, motivation and straightness were all things we saw over the weekend.

There was time for relaxation and fun and games too.  Several were turned loose to either work at liberty or just to have some time out and they took advantage of that having a good roll and a charge about.

One youngster Humphry was backed on the second day bareback after approaching the mounting block and breaking down every stage into tiny increments he was happy with. Only when he was calm,relaxed, attentive and focussed did Hannah slide on his back bareback.  His owner Helen was very proud and a bit emotional as it was his first outing to a new place.  He had been a bit anxious the first day and it looked like backing him was not to be this time.  Helen had done a lot of preparation at home, but in a new place away from his friends he was a bit uptight and clingy to the other visiting horses that were paddocked next to him.  On the Sunday he was a different horse however, I hope in part from an essence combination I made for him to promote calmness, moderation ( of behaviour and energy in his case ), balance and focus.  A remedy for confidence for Helen too.

Some really interesting work was done in the stables with Phoebe who unfortunately developed an attack of Uveitis just before the workshop so Gemma’s hopes of riding her during the clinic went out the window.  It became a priority to be able to medicate her eye as she had been been given eye drops by the vet and was proving almost impossible to put the drops in.

Hannah broke the process down into small stages and introduced a toy for her to target and roll ( A ball ) something she new how to do and was really easy and so could be reinforced a lot so it was fun and highly motivating.  Then would go back to a tiny bit of approaching the eye first with one hand, then two, then right up to the corner of the eye and then with the pipette.  In between short sessions she would go back to the ball.  Great success as Gemma can now give her the drops.

Come along for a fun day, open to young or old, beginners welcome.  A great way to build up your relationship with your horse.

The format of the day will be introductions, discussion and training where necessary about body language, rope work then course walk.  We would then follow on with a practice session.  We would share a picnic lunch if participants would like to bring a dish to share or their own packed lunch.  After lunch we have the competition to put into practice the mornings learnings.  We finish off the day with Rossettes to be awarded and I will be donating a small gift and a voucher to the winner.  Tea Break refreshments provided.

Cranio Sacral Therapy is a popular theme this year.  I have Mike Harrison principal of the Anglian School of Craniosacral Therapy holding several workshops at Brook Farm this summer and possibly further dates in the Autumn.  There will be two three day workshops for his experienced craniosacral Therapist and students of his courses plus a three or four day horse owners and other Therapists course.

Students will be working on each other first and learning to just feel and be present.  We will be using the village hall for the lecture and human experience and time at the farm here will be establishing a heart connection with the horses and allowing them to guide us as to what they need from us.  Mike likes to work with the horses loose with at least two horses present together as often they will present themselves to the person and then go to their companion and begin grooming the area that needed the help!

Craniosacral therapy is a subtle and profound form of healing which assists the body’s natural capacity for self-repair. The principle is one of ‘listening’ through the practitioner’s hands, and being led by the body to a respond appropriately.

What are the benefits of craniosacral therapy?
